Protection

Protection Officers are armed personnel responsible for protecting the Parliament Buildings so that parliamentarians and employees can carry out their legislative duties in a safe and secure environment. They also balance security and access to promote a safe and positive experience for visitors.

Duties

Duties include but are not limited to:

• Facilitating and controlling access to Parliament Hill and the Parliamentary Precinct buildings from assigned posts
• Recognizing suspicious behaviours through direct observation or by the use of CCTV
• Responding to incidents that may present a threat
• Monitoring for potentially hazardous materials and situations
• Conducting security patrols
• Protecting and securing incident/accident scenes
• Providing first aid as a first responder
• Carrying a firearm, radio, baton, and other protective equipment
• Conducting physical searches of designated areas
• Writing security incident reports
• Operating alarm control panels and responding to alarms

Detection

Detection Specialists play a critical role in the security screening process by detecting and preventing physical security threats to the Parliament of Canada.

Duties

Duties include but are not limited to:

• Identifying questionable, prohibited, and restricted items through detection and reporting during the scanning process in designated buildings
• Enforcing scanning regulations with visitors seeking access to the Parliament of Canada, and detecting and preventing questionable, restricted, and prohibited items from entering the Parliament Buildings
• Receiving and directing visitors through the electronic screening equipment
